01) Operation Mincemeat :
This film is set during world War 2 and follows British Intelligence officer as they device a plan to mislead the Nazis about the allied invasion of Sicily.
By planting false documents on a corpse disguised as a British officer, they aim to convince the Germans that the invasion will occur elsewhere operation Mincemeat depict the true story of one of the most daring and ingenious deception operation in military history.
That fact, that it was actually a true story in half pf what makes this movie so interesting that coupled with some great acting intense script and the high stakes of war that makes Operation Mincemeat a fascinating espionage thriller.
02) Allied :
This film follows a Canadian intelligence officers and French Resistance fighter who fall in love during a mission to assassinate a German official only to have their happiness. Threatened by suspicious that the woman might be a German spy.
Allied comes from director Robert Zemeckis known for Big names movies including forest gump and back to the future. Allied is far from his best movie but is noteworthy for a few things including superb acting from the two leads, some thrilling, highly engaging scenes and an emotional plot. While it might not be for everyone Allied is worth a check by fans of spy thrillers, you can find it in almost every region on Netflix but not the US.
03) Killing Eve :
This series follows a bored MI5 security officer who becomes obsessed with capturing a talented and psychopathic assassins killing eve is a stylish spy vs spy type series that is a well written and fun game of cat and mouse. One of the standards of this show is the performance of Sanda Ole and Jodie corner whose fascinating dynamic help to drive the series.
Its also got a heavy dose of dark humor and blending that with the intense suspense makes for an addicting watch. Killing eve has a four total seasons and it is finished series. You can find it in a lot of Netflix region but not all. You can find it in US, The UK, South Africa, Germany, Brazil and more.
04) Munich-The edge of war:
This film is about a british and German diplomat as they reunite in Munich during a critical conference risking their lives to prevent world war 2. Amidst escalating tension and political deception.
This film is based on a Robert Harris Novel and is a film that really nails the classic war spy thriller formula. Its extremely tense maintaining the suspense throughout most of the movie and has some strong performances and is just overall fascinating spy thriller and war movie fans should both really enjoy this flick.
05) The Night Agent :
An FBI agent who works in the white house monitoring an emergency phone has his Mindane routine shattered when a call plunges him into a high stakes conspiracy involving a spy within the government. The night agent is a thrilling, action packed series that’s based on the Mathew Quirk novel of the same name.
Its pretty edge of your seat suspenseful although admittedly the plot gets a little far fetched at times. But if you can get behind a series that really tries to entertain you and is pretty successful at that then you might really enjoy it. The Night Agent is one 10 episode season at the moment with a second season on the way.
06) The Grey Man :
Its about a highly skilled CIA operation who uncover dark secrets within the agency and becomes the target of a global man hunt. This was Netflix attempt to start a big budget spy franchise in the vein of James Bond or Mission Impossible. The result were mixed with critics mostly hating it and audiences mostly loved it.
That usually translated to a technically flawed film that is entertaining nonetheless. And The Grey Man is indeed entertaining with a relentless pace, breathtaking action sequences and an all star cast. And fans of the movie will be glad to near there is a sequel and spin off on the way with Ryan Gosling reprising his role.
07) The Courier :
Set in the cold war, this is the true story of a British Businessman who is recruited by MI6 and the CIA in order to deliver message to a soviet officer helping to prevent a nuclear confrontation.
The courier stars Benedict Cumberbatch in an excellent performance and this film does a good job of recreating the tension and Paranoia everyone felt during the Cuban Missile crisis. Its got an old school vibe that puts you right back in the era and overall. The courier is one of the best spy movie released in years. Right now it can be found in a few Netflix region including Australia, Belgium, The Netherland and more.
08) The black List :
It follows a Notorious fugitive who surrender to the FBI where he proposes to help capture some of the world’s most dangerous criminals.
The Black list is not purely a spy series but there is enough spy elements to make it worthy of this list. James Spader stars and gives a great performances as the criminal turned informant and this series does a good job of balancing action, plot twist and high stakes suspense making for a show that is really hard to shut off.
Blacklist does tend to get a little out there with the plot on occasion but most of all its a really good watch for fans of espionage thriller.
09) The Spy :
This limited series is based on the true story of Israil Clerk turned mossad agent who infiltrated the highest rank of the Syrian government in the 1960s. Disguised as a wealthy businessman, he navigates a dangerous double life. Gathering crucial intelligence that shapes Israil’s defense stratergies.
The spy is an intense and suspended espionage thriller that effectively captured the high stakes and emotional toll of leading a double life. Sacha Baron Cohen is amazing in the lead role showing his remarkable range as an actor. The spy is a great series with some fascinating history, excellent period details and just an all around thriling story.
10) Tinker Tailor soldier Spy :
This is set during the cold war and follows a retired British intelligence officers as he is brought back to uncover a soviet double agent within the upper echelons of MI6.
Tinker tailor soldier spy is a masterfully crafted spy thriller that’s atmospheric and full of cold war Paranoia Gary oldman is great as always as well as the rest of the ensemble cast including benedict batch and Tom Hardy. Tinker Tailor soldier spy is definitely a standout in the spy genre but there is one big downside right now you can only find it on netflix in UK.
